Always wear your seatbelt with the lap belt over your hips and the shoulder strap across your body from shoulder to opposite hip. Know where your vehicle’s operating controls are located. Check your side mirrors, rearview mirror and blind spots (over your shoulders) before making a lane change, pulling into traffic, or backing out. Always keep both hands on the steering wheel and on opposite sides. Slow down when making a turn. Observe and adhere to the speed limit. Slow down at yellow lights. Keep an extra eye out at crosswalks. Ensure that your medications will not cause adverse side effects such as drowsiness. Begin and end turns in the correct lane. Always use your signals when turning or making a lane change. Pay attention to traffic signs and know what they mean. Maintain a safe following distance (three seconds behind-pick a marker and count how many seconds it takes for you to get to it after the car in front of you does). Check tires for correct tread and air pressure. Keep your headlights, mirrors, windshield, and other windows clean. Avoid distractions such as talking on the phone, texting, eating, and reaching for items. Get an adequate amount of sleep each night. Avoid driving in bad weather or at night. Have your eyes checked by a doctor once a year. Have your hearing checked by a doctor once a year. Make sure your seat position is comfortable, allows you to see above the windshield, and allows you to wear your seatbelt correctly.
